We are about 6 weeks out from “frost free” in our area, so its time to get growing! If you haven’t started seeds indoors yet, don’t worry! There is still time to sow Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, celery, eggplant, lettuce, melons, and squash. You could even do tomatoes still, hurry! Vegetable gardening doesn’t start with the frost free date though - it’s almost time to plant some things directly into your garden - kale, radishes and peas can be sown anytime now, and carrots, endive/escarole, leeks, parsnips and spinach can be sown in the second half of the month.
Fruit bushes! Now that the ground has thawed, you can plant raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and more! Place these in a full sun area, and prepare to harvest the bounty! When planting blueberries, make sure to amend the soil with plenty of peat moss, and add some garden sulfur to lower the soil pH. Blue berries need an acid soil to thrive!
